The study touted walking as a ‘wonder drug’, cutting risks of breast and prostate cancer by as much as 40% and a 50% reduction for bowel cancer patients if they upped the walking distance to two miles per day. Walking pace in these studies was recommended at 3 mph, the average walking speed for most individuals.

Ciarán Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, stated to DailyMail: ‘Today’s research highlights the very simple reality – walking can save lives. ‘We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to what is a very simple and obvious solution. Physical activity is a wonder drug and health care professionals must prescribe physical activity, such as walking, as a standard part of cancer recovery.”

 Scientists are not certain as to the reason for these curative effects however they speculate that walking reduces the levels of cancer-promoting hormones that may be increased by higher levels of body fat.

These men, all previously diagnosed with cancer, were initially interviewed to establish physical activity levels in 1988, 1993 and again in 2008.

Documented physical activities included walking, sports, recreational activities and stair climbing. Adjusting for body mass index, diet, age, smoking, parental mortality and body mass index the researchers found a significant correlation between activity and longevity among the participants.

The most physically active cancer survivors in the study were 38% less likely to die of cancer and 49% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those measuring the least amounts of physical activity in 2008.

“While this longitudinal study was not designed to explain the reasons behind the significant health benefits of physical activity among male cancer survivors it should provide significant motivation for cancer survivors to explore methods of staying more physically active with their physicians during follow up exams,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.
