Whether labeled a walking workstation or a treadmill desk numerous studies are discovering the litany of benefits these office treadmills are imparting to employees. The most recent study comes out of the Department of Psychology in the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Led by Michael Sliter, an assistant professor of psychology, faculty and students conducted a study which showed that walking workstations provided both physical and mental health benefits independent of exercise habits and BMI (Body Mass Index).

In a posting on the IUPUI website Dr. Slater summed up the findings, We found that the walking workstations, regardless of a person’s exercise habits or body mass index (BMI), had significant benefits,” Sliter said. “Even if you don’t exercise or if you are overweight, you’ll experience both short-term physical and psychological benefits.”

The study evaluated 180 participants in areas such as stress, arousal, task satisfaction, boredom, and computer task accuracy levels for walking, cycling, seated and standing participants.

The walking workstations subjects exhibited higher satisfaction and arousal levels while simultaneously experiencing less stress and boredom than their cycling, standing or sitting counterparts. Surprisingly the cycling workstations actually were found to reduce satisfaction and performance levels in test subjects.

Cycle & Standing Desks Inferior to A Treadmill Desk

Dr. Sliter walked the talk in his final analysis, completing the study findings “Workout at Work: Laboratory Test of Psychological and Performance Outcomes of Active Workstations written entirely using a treadmill desk and ultimately publishing it to the American Psychological Association’s Journal of Occupational Health Psychology.

IUPUI has a history of implementing treadmill desks at the office both for personal use and studies. In fact TrekDesk has reported on Dr. NiCole Keith an associate professor of Physical Education who walks daily with her TrekDesk Treadmill Desk

Walking workstations have been shown to improve health, concentration, productivity, mood and also serve as excellent disease prevention tools (Research section) as well. Previous studies have shown that office treadmills are superior in overall performance to standing desks. Cycling, while better than just sitting at a desk, still compromises a user’s spine while in use and as shown by Dr. Sliter’s work also reduces performance and satisfaction levels of employees.

More science is on its way illustrating the myriad benefits of walking workstations but with the multitude of studies already singing the praises of this new way to work there seems to be little doubt that office treadmills are here to stay.
