A January study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed some shocking facts about the severe lack of physical activity among the majority of Americans.


Inactivity On The Couch

As measured by accelerometers, only 3.5 percent of our adult population attains the activity equivalent of slow walking for just 30 minutes a day most days of the week. Think about this for a moment. Of every 100 American adults, 96 are so sedentary that they could almost be classified as statues. This is a serious threat to our our country amidst the rising costs of health care.


It has already been shown that 84% of health insurance claims are lifestyle related. Congress is scrambling for ways to pay for it but perhaps a look in the mirror by most Americans is more practical. If Americans can recognized the root cause of the rising obesity epidemic lies within their own control they can institute measures to address and defeat the problem.

Treadmill desks combat the two main reasons Americans cite for not engaging in physical activity: lack of time and lack of motivation. With a treadmill desk employees are able to engage in a significant amount of exercise without committing to any extra time in their day. Additionally, a treadmill desk is automatic so procrastination or lack of motivation is cured once they start walking and working.

Physical inactivity is a serious health risk, as evidenced by the accompanying increase in degenerative diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, back pain, cancers, osteoporosis and arthritis. It is predicted that within 10 years one out of every 10 dollars spent in this country will go toward health care.

Using a treadmill desk allows people to live guilt free as well. Leaving the office feeling energized armed with the knowledge that they enhanced their health as well is very powerful and very beneficial.
