Physical Activity Shown to Significantly Extend Lives of Male Cancer Survivors

While the benefits of staying active are well documented for healthy individuals much less has been proven about its impact on those recovering from diseases, specifically cancer. This past week a new study illustrated that physical activity (including walking) could significantly extend the lifespan of male cancer survivors.
The study, co-authored by Kathleen Y. Wolin, PhD, of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and reported in a press release from Loyola University, followed 1,021 male cancer survivors and measured the impact of physical activity on their health. The men had an average age of 71 and had been participants in the Harvard Alumni Healthy Study, a continual study following the health of Harvard undergrads enrolled from the years 1916-1950. These men, all previously diagnosed with cancer, were initially interviewed to establish physical activity levels in 1988, 1993 and again in 2008.
Documented physical activities included walking, sports, recreational activities and stair climbing. Adjusting for body mass index, diet, age, smoking, parental mortality and body mass index the researchers found a significant correlation between activity and longevity among the participants.
The most physically active cancer survivors in the study were 38% less likely to die of cancer and 49% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those measuring the least amounts of physical activity in 2008.
“While this longitudinal study was not designed to explain the reasons behind the significant health benefits of physical activity among male cancer survivors it should provide significant motivation for cancer survivors to explore methods of staying more physically active with their physicians during follow up exams,” stated Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.
